SUMMARY:Workshop Fostering a Sustainable Collaborative Culture with Psychological Safety
DESCRIPTION:I’m giving the workshop Fostering a Sustainable Collaborative Culture with Psychological Safety at DevOpsCon Munich Transformation Day\, December 1. Book your seat. \n \nFostering a Sustainable Collaborative Culture with Psychological Safety\n \nMany DevOps efforts struggle with developing an appropriate company culture. Psychological safety is a key enabler for an effective and sustainable organizational-wide collaborative culture. It increases personal engagement\, makes it easier for people to speak up at work\, and enables learning from failure. When people feel psychologically safe\, your organization will become more adaptive and resilient\, able to deal with changes and innovate. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll learn how to foster a culture of psychological safety that enables high-performing teams to deliver faster and better. The practical exercises teach you to recognize the warning signals of low psychological safety and to take appropriate action to increase the level of psychological safety. \nPsychological safety is important for tech organizations as it enables faster delivery\, innovation\, learning from failures\, and experimentation. People only dare to challenge the status quo when they feel included and safe to contribute. Then failures can become opportunities for learning and sharing ideas for improvement across the whole organization. \nLearning objectives:\n– Learn what psychological safety is and what it isn’t\n– Recognize warning signals of low psychological safety\n– See the benefits that improving psychological safety can bring\n– Explore factors that foster and drive psychological safety \nAgenda:\n– Workshop introduction and check-in exercise\n– Definitions and theory of psychological safety\n– What psychological safety isn’t\, and what to (not) expect from it\n– How psychological safety and DevOps relate to each other\n– Exercise: Recognizing warning signals about lower levels of psychological safety\n– The benefits that psychological safety can bring\n– Exercise: Exploring factors that drive and foster psychological safety\n– Dos and don’ts for leaders for establishing psychological safety.\n– Wrap up\, ask me anything\, and takeaways

SUMMARY:Increasing Team Autonomy for Collaborative Problem-solving - Full day Tutorial at OOP 2025
DESCRIPTION:I will give the full-day tutorial Increasing Team Autonomy for Collaborative Problem-solving at OOP 2025 on Feb 3 in Munich\, Germany. \nBook your seat with a 15% discount with the voucher “OOP25_Linders” at OOP registration. \n \nOOP: The Conference for Software Architecture\nSoftware architects\, developers and IT project managers have been relying on OOP – the best-known and largest conference on all important software architecture topics in the German-speaking world – for their professional development for over 30 years. Why? This conference is the tried-and-tested meeting place for the software scene at the beginning of the year because it always succeeds in providing a state-of-the-art picture of current software development through cutting-edge and practical presentations. \n \nUse the voucher “OOP25_Linders” at OOP registration for a 15% discount \nFive days with more than 130 talks in up to 8 simultaneous tracks: OOP 2025 will once again offer the well-known high quality of presentations. \nIncreasing Team Autonomy for Collaborative Problem-solving\nAgile teams don’t want to depend on outside help to solve problems and deliver value. In this tutorial\, we will practice culture change through visualization exercises to increase team autonomy and agility and learn how to solve problems collaboratively inside teams by playing the Impediment Board Game. \nCulture matters! It can make or break things. Get people moving or inhibit them. Drive people toward results\, or drive them nuts. An agile culture is a foundation for an agile way of working and a successful agile journey\, it is a key factor that you need to work on. In the tutorial\, you will learn ways to visualize the existing culture and come up with ideas for culture change to increase agility. \nProblems that software teams have these days are complex. Team collaboration is essential to solve them. Gamification supports teamworking and helps teams exploit all team members’ knowledge and skills to solve problems collaboratively. We will play a game in the tutorial to recognize problems in the early stages and practice collaborative problem-solving. \nMaximum number of participants: 24 \nTarget Audience: Developer\, Architect\, Tech leads\, Project/Line Manager\, Agile Coach\nPrerequisites: None\nLevel: Advanced \nAbout the trainer\nBen Linders runs a one-person business in Agile\, Lean\, Quality\, and Continuous Improvement. Author of „Getting Value out of Agile Retrospectives“\, „Waardevolle Agile Retrospectives“\, „What Drives Quality“\, „The Agile Self-assessment Game“\, „Problem? What Problem?“\, and „Continuous Improvement“. Creator of many Agile Coaching Tools\, for example\, the Agile Self-assessment Game. \nBen is a well-known speaker and author; he is much respected for sharing his experiences and helping others share theirs. SUMMARY:Gamify until you make it @ DevOpsCon Munich 2024
DESCRIPTION:I’m returning to DevOpsCon Munich to give my talk Gamify It Until You Make It: Improving Agile Development and Operations With Gamification. \n \nImproving Agile Development and Operations With Gamification\nSo many challenges\, so little time. While we’re busy developing software and keeping it operational\, we also need to sharpen the saw\, but how? \nGamification can be a way to look at how you’re doing and find out where to improve. It’s a great way to have everyone involved and get the best out of people. \nIn this presentation\, Ben Linders will show how playing games with the DevOps coaching cards can help to explore your current development and deployment (DevOps) practices and decide as a team what to improve or experiment with. The games that we play are based on an engagement model. Instead of imposing change\, the games enable people to pull in ideas for change and apply those in a way that best suits their collective needs. By playing games\, you can learn from each other. \nTeams can use games\, exercises\, and coaching cards to discuss values\, principles\, and practices\, and share their experiences and learnings. Different game formats can be used to share experiences on DevOps principles and practices and explore how they can be applied effectively. This presentation provides an overview of playing formats and will inspire you to come up with your own formats. \nDevOpsCon Munich\nDevOps Conference – The Conference for Continuous Delivery\, Microservices\, Containers\, Clouds and Lean Business. \nSimplify Complexity\, Amplify\, Agility\, Accelerate InnovationOptimize Delivery and Build \nSecure\, Scalable Applications with Seamless Team Flow \nBoost Productivity with DevOps\, Cloud\, Microservices & Automation \nNetwork with international DevOps Strategists and Industry Leaders

SUMMARY:Problem Solving with Agile Thinking and Practices - Full-day Tutorial at Agile Testing Days 2022
DESCRIPTION:This year I’m giving a full-day tutorial on Problem Solving with Agile Thinking and Practices at Agile Testing Days. Join me November 21 to learn how you can handle impediments effectively and faster and practice your problem-solving skills. \n \nProblem Solving with Agile Thinking and Practices\n \nAgile brings problems to the surface and provides solutions for addressing them. Learn in this Problem-solving workshop how to recognize\, analyze\, and solve problems using agile thinking and practices. \nTeams need to deal with impediments as they slow them down or block the delivery of products. Impediments can be something in the way of working\, be it processes\, tools\, or organizational rules or structures. They slow down teams or block the delivery of products or services. \nAgile can help to identify problems\, it tends to bring problems to the surface and provides solutions for addressing them. Teams will face problems in their daily work. Agile calls these problems impediments. Teams need to be able to deal with impediments as they have an impact on the flow of work\, they are problems that reduce outputs and results. \nIn the workshop Problems Solving with Agile Thinking and Practices\, you will learn how to recognize\, analyze\, and solve problems effectively and faster using agile thinking and practices. \nYou will practice: \n\nRecognizing signals of problems\, and creating safety in teams (and beyond) for people to bring up problems\nAnalyzing problems\, for example by using causal analysis\, Cynefin\, serious games\, blameless post-mortems\, retrospectives\, swarming\, or blocker analysis\nManaging impediments using techniques from Lean & Kanban; decide how to solve them and who should be involved\nPreventing problems using quality techniques like code walkthrough/reviews\, pairing\, CI/CD Using coaching and games to improve collaboration and develop problem-solving skills\n\nThis workshop is intended for Agile Team\, Tech lead\, Scrum master\, Product Owner\, Project/Line Manager\, Agile and Lean Coach. \nKey-Learnings: \n\nBecome able to create a blameless culture where signals are spotted more easily and problems are brought up sooner\nDevelop your skills for analyzing problems to get a deep understanding\nExplore ways to take action and follow up to remove problems or mitigate the impact\nLearn how to collaboratively deal with impediments in your team and organization\nExplore ways to prevent problems from happening again in the future\n\nLearning by practicing and experiencing\nDoing it yourself and reflecting is the way people learn new practices and develop skills in my workshops. They work in teams to try out things and experiment with practices to learn how agile can really look and feel. I coach people\, answer questions\, share my experience\, and provide lots of ideas. They learn from me\, and also from each other. \nI use many exercises\, games\, and real-life cases in my workshops. Examples are the retrospectives toolbox\, the Impediment Game\, and the Agile Self-assessment Game. \nAgile Testing Days\nThe Agile Testing Days Conference is a festival for the agile community. Network & get deep insights in testing & agile excellence. \nThe event is now one of the world’s leading software testing conferences and continues to set new standards with its innovative session formats and diverse speaker line up.

SUMMARY:Getting People Engaged into Agile with Self-Assessments at DevOpsCon Berlin 2022
DESCRIPTION:I’m returning to DevOpsCon Berlin to do an interactive session about Getting People Engaged into Agile with Self-Assessments. Join me June 20-23\, onsite in Berlin\, or online. \nGetting People Engaged into Agile with Self-Assessments\nMany agile “transformations” are failing\, where one of the main reasons is how they are imposing agile models and practices on people. Such an approach conflicts with the agile values and principles\, it’s incongruent and hence ineffective. Engagement models take a different approach\, they involve people in the change process and help them to define and travel their own agile journey. \nLet’s explore how we can use engagement models and gamification to involve people in the change process and help them define and travel their own agile journey. We will play the Agile Self-Assessment Game to experience how to enable people to pull in ideas for change and apply those in a way that best suits their needs. \nPlaying the Agile Self-Assessment Game enables teams to reflect on their own team interworking and agree upon the next steps for their agile journey. With this card game\, they can discover how agile they are and what they can do to increase their agility to deliver more value to their customers and stakeholders. Join us to explore the Agile Self-Assessment Game and try out different playing scenarios. \nDevOpsCon Berlin\nEvery year in June\, DevOpsCon Berlin is the go-to event for DevOps enthusiasts. \nThis year\, too\, we look forward to meeting you again! \nBecause we want to ensure that the lively exchange of knowledge and ideas so typical of DevOpsCon Berlin continues to work well\, we were one of the first in the conference industry to develop our hybrid concept. \nYou can choose to attend the conference either on site or online from your home or office. SUMMARY:Improving Your Quality and Testing Skills with Gamification at OOP 2022
DESCRIPTION:I’m doing a session at OOP 2022 to explore how gamification can be used to improve quality and testing skills. Join me online on February 2\, 2022. \nImproving Your Quality and Testing Skills with Gamification\nSo many challenges\, so little time. As testers or quality engineers\, we need to sharpen the saw\, but how? Gamification can be a way to look at how you’re doing and find out where to improve. It’s a great way to have everyone engaged and get the best out of people. \nIn this presentation\, Ben Linders will show how playing games (onsite or online) with the Agile Testing Coaching Cards and Agile Quality Coaching Cards help to explore your current quality and testing practice and decide as a team on what to improve or experiment with. \nTarget Audience: Testers\, Agile Teams\, Tech Leads\, Technical Coaches\, Scrum Masters\nPrerequisites: None\nLevel: Advanced \nExtended Abstract \nThe Agile Testing Coaching Cards and Agile Quality Coaching Cards are a deck of cards with statements that help people to share and reflect. Examples of cards are “Testers help developers design acceptance criteria for user stories”\, “Failing tests get proper attention even when no defect in the product has been detected”\, and “Refactoring is done to keep code maintainable and reduce technical debt”. \nPlaying games with these coaching cards (onsite or online)\, you can learn from each other. Teams can use the coaching cards to discuss quality and testing values\, principles\, and practices\, and share their experiences and learnings. \nDifferent game formats can be used to share experiences on testing and quality principles and practices and explore how they can be applied effectively. The playing formats from the Agile Self-assessment Game (benlinders.com/game) can be used to play with these cards. This presentation provides an overview of playing formats and will inspire you to come up with your own formats. \nFacilitation is key when playing with these coaching cards. Ben Linders will present how to prepare a game session and facilitate it\, what can be done to keep people engaged\, and how debriefing can help to pull out learnings and ideas for improvement. \nTakeaways: \n– Show how to use gamification to self-assess your current way of working. \n– Present examples of playing games with the Agile Testing Coaching Cards and Agile Quality Coaching Cards. \n– Explore how facilitating games can help to enhance quality and testing in agile teams. \nOOP\nIT professionals who are responsible for software architecture\, IT projects\, and sophisticated programming and development rely on the OOP conference – one of the most well-known and largest software conferences in the German-speaking world – when it comes to their professional development. \nThis makes OOP conference a fixed date in the calendar for the software community\, even digitally. The latest trends from the field of software technology as well as practice-oriented presentations by experienced and recognized speakers who will share their knowledge\, enthusiasm and also their concerns with you.

Using some playful exercises I learned several easy ways to extract the current status of the team and how to decide which should be the next steps to address potential problems and risks” \nNikolaos Raptis – Scrum Master – Software Developer at Scytl Secure Electronic Voting \n“I got a better understanding of retrospectives and many ideas on how to use them in my work. I can suggest this workshop to anyone that wants to go agile.  Also thanks for the reading material\, I found it very helpful.” \nBill Souliotis – Manager Software Research & Development Graphics User Interface at BETA CAE Systems \n“After working together for many years\, our team (myself included) grew out of the need for formal retrospectives. This workshop helped to get some fresh ideas that can refuel our retros and stressed some key points about the necessity and importance of facilitation in these events.” \nYorgos Saslis – Solution Design Executive at CytechMobile.com \n“I’d like to thank you again for your excellent workshop. It was fun and I already started using some of the ideas with my team. The change is definitely notable.” \nLiran Ben-Porat\, qSpark LTD \n“Thanks once again for a wonderful workshop! We have a lot of useful outputs which we are going to implement. And thanks for the free copy of your book about the retrospectives\, now we are able to go through the topics once again and do the exercises in our company.” \nJakub Grós\, Project Engineer at Honeywell \n“I found the workshop very useful. We’ve already started to experiment with some action items we gave ourselves in the workshop\, doing changes in our overall retrospective approach. We are also trying out cross facilitation\, having our retrospectives facilitated by a Scrum master of another team.” \nSimona Humpolová\, Scrum master at EmbedIT \nI have taken some of my Scrum masters to Ben’s retrospective training. I like the training very much\, and also his website which contains many retro techniques. I still use this as a reference when I coach people. \nZoltán Ludányi\, Agile Software Development Consultant \nLearning by practicing and experiencing\nDoing it yourself and reflecting is the way people learn new practices and develop skills in my workshops. SUMMARY:Aginext 2021
DESCRIPTION:At Aginext 2021 I’m doing a session together with Fabio Armani where we explore psychological safety and culture in teams. Join us March 17-19\, online\, Aginext 2021. \n \nHow Safe is your Team?\nPsychological safety in teams matters\, it crucial to enable productive communication and collaboration. It’s also essential if you aim for long-lasting teams as things will happen and relationships can get hurt; team members need to be aware of what’s happening in the team and feel safe enough to deal with them. But\, how safe is your team? How can we find out if there are things that are making the team unsafe\, that are impacting the team culture? \nIn this mini-workshop\, we’ll play games in small groups using a deck of coaching cards for psychological safety and team culture. You’ll learn how you can get a deeper insight into what’s happening in teams using gamification. In a safe setting\, you can share what you have experienced working in teams\, how that impacted the team’s safety and culture\, and what made it turn around … or worse. \nCome play a game with psychological safety and team culture cards. \nAginext\nAginext is the only Post-Agile conference for advanced agilists and DevOps practitioners\, across roles\, departments or divisions. And especially across geography and bandwidth. Aginext Live! is an online networking event built around interactive talks\, workshops\, panels\, games and activities. Because none of us miss one-sided webinars — from our own teams to family and friends to our agile communities\, we miss connecting. \nAfter running 18 events including the last two online — plus hundreds of meetups — we’ve experimented\, reflected and rebuilt our online agile event to focus on creating one-to-one experiences. T \nIn its fifth year\, Aginext brings together the most forward-thinking agile minds to help you help your team move ahead with clarity\, purpose\, resilience and speed.

Retrospective facilitators need to have a toolbox of retrospective exercises and the skills to design and lead valuable agile retrospectives. \nRemote retrospectives pose extra challenges due to not having people in one physical room for the retrospective: \n\nRecognizing and dealing with retrospective smells or anti-patterns is hard in online meetings (but it can be done!)\nIt’s more difficult to foster productive and collaborative behavior and keep everyone involved during the meeting\nNot physically being together calls for different retrospective exercises or innovative ways to do exercises online\nPsychological safety is a key issue in any retrospective\, it’s more challenging when people collaborate remotely\n\nIn the workshop Facilitating Remote Retrospectives\, we will practice doing remote retrospectives while fostering psychological safety using exercises that keep people involved. \nAudience\nThis workshop is intended for: \n\nRetrospective Facilitators\nTechnical (team) leaders and Scrum masters\nAgile Teams\nAgile and Lean Coaches\nProduct Owners and Project/Line Managers\nAnybody who is involved in agile retrospectives\n\nThe practices in this workshop will help you to get more value from doing remote agile retrospectives. \nResults\nWhat will you get out of this workshop: \n\nExplore unproductive behavior in retrospectives and learn to recognize retrospective smells or anti-patterns\nDevelop your facilitation skills for running remote retrospectives\nPractice different exercises for distributed retrospectives using online tools\nLearn about psychological safety in online meetings and what can be done to keep people involved\n\nPractical information\nFour-hour interactive live workshop. \nYou can book this workshop by buying a ticket or by contacting me by email at benlinders@gmail.com. \nThere’s no minimum number of attendees\, this workshop will be held even if only one person signs up. \nMy approach enables attendees to apply the things they learned in their daily work.\nThe workshops are time well spend; organizations get value for their money!

Practice Collaborative Problem-solving\nWorking in teams we face problems in our daily work. As a team\, we should be able to solve problems collaboratively. Agile calls these problems impediments. \nImpediments can be something in the way of working\, processes\, tools\, or organizational rules or structures. They can also be something cultural or structural. \nIn this mini-workshop\, we’ll practice solving an impediment as a team. Next\, we’ll explore how we solved it\, how we worked together. What hindered and helped us. We’ll learn what we can do to collaborate better. \nTarget Audience: Scrum masters\, tech leads\, agile coaches\, consultants\, developers\, testers\, managers\, CxOs\nPrerequisites: Some experience of working in teams\nLevel: Advanced \nExtended Abstract:\nThis is a hands-on mini-workshop about collaborative problem-solving. SUMMARY:Agile Tour Brussels 2020
DESCRIPTION:I’m returning to Agile Tour Brussels to do a futurespective on software development in 2040. Join this conference online on October 30\, 2020. \nBack to the Future – A Futurespective on Software Development in 2040\nWe start the futurespective by sketching the future. How is software developed in 2040? Is it people\, AI\, or a combination? Teams\, large groups\, or individual work? Programming and testing\, or other approaches? Continuous delivery\, chunks\, iterations\, push or pull? Distributed\, dispersed\, localized teams? There are no limits\, let your imagination flow to visualize ideas about developing software products in 2040. \nNext\, we’ll discuss what got us there. How did these new ways of developing software come into existence? How did we discover them? What experiments led to this? What drove us or influenced us along the way? \nFinally\, we think about the steps that we can take in 2020 to reach the castle in the sky of software development. What can we do now to become better? What should we stop as it won’t exist in the future anymore? \nLet’s find out how the future of software development looks\, by doing a futurespective exercise in groups! \nAgile Tour Brussels\nAgile Tour Brussels is one of the biggest conferences about Agility in Belgium. We are a part of the Agile Tour\, a series of non-profit events over several cities throughout October and December. Our main goal is to spread the word about Agile practices. \nATBru is an all audience conference. We strive to have a wide program that suits any Agile practitioner’s levels. Workshops\, Agile games\, talks\, we have it all. \nJoin us Online in 2020 and meet a worldwide vibrant community of Agile practitioners.

SUMMARY:Virtual Agile Self-assessments in Remote and Distributed Teams
DESCRIPTION:I’m doing a short webinar on Virtual Agile Self-assessments in Remote and Distributed Teams on October 26\, in collaboration with Agile Actors #learning. \nVirtual Agile Self-assessments in Remote and Distributed Team\nWorking in remote or distributed teams can be challenging. Distance and time differences make it more difficult to work together. Where communication tools have improved significantly over the years\, they don’t really help us to find out how people think or feel or to establish a collaborative culture. \nIn this interactive free virtual webinar\, Ben Linders will explore how we can do virtual agile self-assessments to reflect on the way of working in distributed teams. Playing the Agile self-assessment Game online\, teams can dive deeply into how things are going and agree upon actions to improve how the team collaborates and communicates. \nThe Agile Self-assessment Game is used by teams and organizations to self-assess their agility. It uses an engagement model to involve people in the assessment to not impose change on people but instead enables them to pull in ideas for change and apply those in a way that best suits their needs. Join this webinar to learn how to play the Agile self-assessment Game in remote and distributed teams. \nOn November 19-20\, Ben Linders will give the online virtual course Continuous Improvement in Remote and Distributed Teams. \nAgile Actors #learning\nAgile Actors #learning is the Learning Ecosystem for the ambitious and talented tech professional. From setting meaningful personal goals to getting personal coaching\, it helps you find your next career dot and deliver value to the real world. \nWe are helping Tech Professionals to combine theory with best practices as well as real-world experiences in order to grow and excel. \nOur courses\, developed by experienced Software Engineers\, Testers\, Agile Coaches focus on hands-on examples and projects to get you up to speed with any new technology\, tool or methodology.

We have loads working in agile software development\, but we welcome people from all sectors\, horizontals and verticals\, and all levels of experience. \nAnd this year\, for the first time\, we are opening our local conference to the whole world! We are still holding our Friday in-real-life conference but we will also hold two remote half days\, which will allow much of the world to connect over these agile topics.
