SUMMARY:Increasing Team Autonomy for Collaborative Problem-solving - Full day Tutorial at OOP 2025
DESCRIPTION:I will give the full-day tutorial Increasing Team Autonomy for Collaborative Problem-solving at OOP 2025 on Feb 3 in Munich\, Germany. \nBook your seat with a 15% discount with the voucher “OOP25_Linders” at OOP registration. \n \nOOP: The Conference for Software Architecture\nSoftware architects\, developers and IT project managers have been relying on OOP – the best-known and largest conference on all important software architecture topics in the German-speaking world – for their professional development for over 30 years. Why? This conference is the tried-and-tested meeting place for the software scene at the beginning of the year because it always succeeds in providing a state-of-the-art picture of current software development through cutting-edge and practical presentations. \n \nUse the voucher “OOP25_Linders” at OOP registration for a 15% discount \nFive days with more than 130 talks in up to 8 simultaneous tracks: OOP 2025 will once again offer the well-known high quality of presentations. \nIncreasing Team Autonomy for Collaborative Problem-solving\nAgile teams don’t want to depend on outside help to solve problems and deliver value. In this tutorial\, we will practice culture change through visualization exercises to increase team autonomy and agility and learn how to solve problems collaboratively inside teams by playing the Impediment Board Game. \nCulture matters! It can make or break things. Get people moving or inhibit them. Drive people toward results\, or drive them nuts. An agile culture is a foundation for an agile way of working and a successful agile journey\, it is a key factor that you need to work on. In the tutorial\, you will learn ways to visualize the existing culture and come up with ideas for culture change to increase agility. \nProblems that software teams have these days are complex. Team collaboration is essential to solve them. Gamification supports teamworking and helps teams exploit all team members’ knowledge and skills to solve problems collaboratively. We will play a game in the tutorial to recognize problems in the early stages and practice collaborative problem-solving. \nMaximum number of participants: 24 \nTarget Audience: Developer\, Architect\, Tech leads\, Project/Line Manager\, Agile Coach\nPrerequisites: None\nLevel: Advanced \nAbout the trainer\nBen Linders runs a one-person business in Agile\, Lean\, Quality\, and Continuous Improvement. Author of „Getting Value out of Agile Retrospectives“\, „Waardevolle Agile Retrospectives“\, „What Drives Quality“\, „The Agile Self-assessment Game“\, „Problem? What Problem?“\, and „Continuous Improvement“. Creator of many Agile Coaching Tools\, for example\, the Agile Self-assessment Game. \nBen is a well-known speaker and author; he is much respected for sharing his experiences and helping others share theirs. His books and games have been translated into more than 12 languages and are used by professionals in teams and organizations all around the world. \nAs a trainer\, facilitator\, coach\, and advisor\, he helps organizations with effectively deploying software development and management practices. He focuses on continuous improvement\, collaboration and communication\, and professional development\, to deliver business value to customers. \n

SUMMARY:Workshop on Problem-solving and keynote on Gamification at DevOpsCon Singapore 2024
DESCRIPTION:I’m returning to DevOpsCon Singapore to give the workshop Fostering an Agile Culture for Effective Problem Solving and a keynote on Improving Agile Development and Operations With Gamification. Join me on November 25-28. \n \nWorkshop Fostering an Agile Culture for Effective Problem Solving\nPractice culture change\, learn how to increase team autonomy and morale for effective problem-solving\, and explore retrospectives to increase business agility in this interactive workshop. \nAdopting agile often doesn’t live up to its promise of delivering better products fast at lower costs. The missing ingredients that cause failure have to do with an insufficient agile mindset and difficulties in changing to a culture of agile thinking and acting. An agile culture is the foundation for a collaborative way of working and business agility\, it is a key factor that you need to work on. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll explore how organizations can visualize their culture. We learn how organizations can foster a mindset and culture change toward agility and how they can apply agile DevOps practices and capabilities to deliver value frequently and fast. \nWe’ll explore how team autonomy and morale can be increased by playing the Agile Impediment Board Game. Using gamification we’ll practice effective collaborative problem-solving techniques. \nFinally\, we’ll see how agile retrospectives can be used to establish continuous improvement with effective communication and collaboration\, to increase the agility of teams and the organization. \nAttendees get free downloadable copies of the Culture Cards\, Impediment Board Game\, and ebook Problem? What Problem? (value $40). \nGamify It Until You Make It: Improving Agile Development and Operations With Gamification\nSo many challenges\, so little time. While we’re busy developing software and keeping it operational\, we also need to sharpen the saw\, but how? Gamification can be a way to look at how you’re doing and find out where to improve. It’s a great way to have everyone involved and get the best out of people. \nIn this keynote\, Ben Linders will show how playing games with the DevOps coaching cards can help to explore your current development and deployment (DevOps) practices and decide as a team what to improve or experiment with. The games that we play are based on an engagement model. Instead of imposing change\, the games enable people to pull in ideas for change and apply those in a way that best suits their collective needs. \nBy playing games\, you can learn from each other. Teams can use games\, exercises\, and coaching cards to discuss values\, principles\, and practices\, and share their experiences and learnings. Different game formats can be used to share experiences on DevOps principles and practices and explore how they can be applied effectively. This presentation provides an overview of playing formats and will inspire you to come up with your own formats. \nDevOpsCon Singapore\nDevOps is fundamentally changing the IT world and sets the path for successful business transformation. Join DevOpsCon to learn about the latest tools. \nHow do cloud platforms\, microservices\, and Kubernetes play together with comprehensive automation and continuous delivery? How can you handle increasing complexity in your organization? \nAt DevOpsCon\, you will meet internationally recognized thought leaders of the DevOps movement and benefit from their expertise.

SUMMARY:OOP 2021
DESCRIPTION:In 2021 I’m back at OOP conference\, doing a mini-workshop on collaborative problem-solving. Join me online\, February 8-12\, 2021. \n \nProblem? What Problem? Practice Collaborative Problem-solving\nWorking in teams we face problems in our daily work. As a team\, we should be able to solve problems collaboratively. Agile calls these problems impediments. \nImpediments can be something in the way of working\, processes\, tools\, or organizational rules or structures. They can also be something cultural or structural. \nIn this mini-workshop\, we’ll practice solving an impediment as a team. Next\, we’ll explore how we solved it\, how we worked together. What hindered and helped us. We’ll learn what we can do to collaborate better. \nTarget Audience: Scrum masters\, tech leads\, agile coaches\, consultants\, developers\, testers\, managers\, CxOs\nPrerequisites: Some experience of working in teams\nLevel: Advanced \nExtended Abstract:\nThis is a hands-on mini-workshop about collaborative problem-solving. It will be an interactive session where people work together to solve a problem in a kind of role-play. Next\, we’ll explore the behaviors that arose\, focusing on what helps and hinders collaboration. \nI’ll kick it off by presenting problem-solving techniques and tips for collaborative problem-solving and dealing with impediments. \nDuring the session\, we’ll split up into groups using breakout rooms. In each group\, a part of the attendees will do a role play where they work on a problem\, where others will be observing how this goes. If time permits\, we’ll rotate solving two impediments. \nNext\, the observers will share what they saw happening where the group discusses this. \nBEN LINDERS \nBen Linders is an Independent Consultant in Agile\, Lean\, Quality\, and Continuous Improvement. As an adviser\, trainer\, and coach\, he helps organizations with effectively deploying software development and management practices. He focuses on continuous improvement\, collaboration and communication\, and professional development\, to deliver business value to customers. \nBen is an active member of networks on Agile\, Lean\, and Quality\, and a well-known speaker and author. \nOOP conference\nOn February 8 – 12\, the OOP conference will take place digitally for the first time under the motto “Back To The Future”! \nExperience the OOP with all its known & proven formats\, practice-oriented program content and interactive exchange in the comfort of your home or home office. \nWe are happy to present you the tracks for 2021. From Modern Enterprise Architecture to DevOps\, DDD\, Testing & Quality and Business Agility\, you are sure to find exactly what suits your professional challenges!

SUMMARY:DevOpsCon Munich 2019
DESCRIPTION:I’m returning to DevOpsCon to talk about Organizational Agility: Taking Retrospectives to the Next Level and do a mini-workshop on Impediments. Join me in Munich on December 2-4\, 2019. \nOrganizational Agility: Taking Retrospectives to the Next Level\nNowadays many agile teams are doing retrospectives regularly. They are investing time to reflect\, learn\, and take action to improve their way of working and deal with problems that they are facing in a structural way. \nOrganizations are seeing the benefits from this: teams that are becoming empowered\, being able to deliver more value\, happy employees\, and fewer people leaving the organization. \nIt’s time to take retrospectives to a higher level\, and use them to reveal and solve systemic organizational problems. Problems that exist at a project or product level\, are related to the collaboration between teams and their stakeholders. Agile Retrospectives can be used to do that\, but you need a different approach. \nIn this session\, Ben Linders will show how we can use retrospectives to improve the agility of organizations. \nHe will explore: \n\nHow we can actively involve external stakeholders into the team retrospectives\nWhat can be done to focus retrospectives on end-to-end goals and organizational-wide collaboration\nHow to do multi-team retrospectives at the project\, product\, or system level\nHow to create transparency on the targets and show how teams contribute to them in retrospectives\nHow to assist teams in self-assessing their agility\n\nThe Impediment Board Game\nProblem? What Problem? Learn how to deal effectively with Impediments \nIf your organization wants to become agile and lean\, teams need to be able to handle impediments quickly and effectively. Playing the Impediment Board Game\, you will practice how to recognize and analyze impediments\, understand how they hinder teams\, and decide what to do by deploying agile and lean principles and good practices. You’ll learn to become more effective by recognizing impediments early and get rid of them before they become a major issue. \nThe impediment game teaches you the five steps for handling impediments effectively: \n\nrecognize and analyze impediments\nfind out how they hinder the team\nfind effective solutions to deal with them\ndecide what to do and who can do it\nlearn how to become more effective in dealing with impediments\n\nAgile coaches use the Impediment Board Game in agile transformations to coach teams and help them to become self-organized and empowered to solve any impediments that they might face on their agile journey. Come play the Impediment Board Game! \nDevOpsCon\nThe Conference for Continuous Delivery\, Microservices\, Containers\, Cloud & Lean Business. \nDevOps is fundamentally changing the IT world and sets the path for successful business transformation. Join DevOpsCon to learn about the latest tools\, technologies\, and methodologies for building and maintaining secure\, scalable\, and resilient software systems. \nHow do cloud platforms\, microservices\, and Kubernetes play together with comprehensive automation and continuous delivery? How can you handle increasing complexity in your organization and empower high-performance teams with the right tools and agile methodologies? DevOpsCon provides plenty of answers. \nAt DevOpsCon\, you will meet internationally recognized thought leaders of the DevOps movement and benefit from their expertise. Attend inspiring sessions and in-depth workshops to learn what you need to push your DevOps skills to the next level.

SUMMARY:Agile Management Congress 2019
DESCRIPTION:I’m returning to the Agile Management Congress in Prague on Nov 25 to do a mini-workshop on Dealing with Impediments and a full-day workshop Improving Organizational Agility on Nov 26. \nProblem? What problem? Learn how to deal effectively with impediments.\nIf your organization wants to become agile and lean\, teams need to be able to handle impediments quickly and effectively. \nPlaying the Impediment Board Game\, you will practice how to recognize and analyze impediments\, understand how they hinder teams\, and decide what to do by deploying agile and lean principles and good practices. You’ll learn to become more effective by recognizing impediments early and get rid of them before they become a major issue. \nThe impediment game teaches you the five steps for handling impediments effectively:\n– recognize and analyze impediments\n– find out how they hinder the team\n– find effective solutions to deal with them\n– decide what to do and who can do it\n– learn how to become more effective in dealing with impediments \nAgile coaches use the Impediment Board Game in agile transformations to coach teams and help them to become self-organized and empowered to solve any impediments that they might face on their agile journey. \nCome play the impediment board game! \nAgile Management Congress\nAgile Management Congress (AMC) is a forum and learning platform on agile management for knowledge-based organizations. \nWe have a mission to address management innovators – game changers and innovative leaders from companies\, consultancies and academia\, who are trying to build humancentric and alternative organizational arrangements to opposing vertical corporate bureaucracies\, to share their practical transformational experience and learn from each other. Working in a small groups\, through series of practical mini workshops\, case studies\, moderated discussions and group work with peers they may gain better inside into how agility can help them transform their business or daily routine. It is place of learning from gurus\, sharing knowledge with peers\, gain new inspiration and ideas with active engagement of the participants! This is not a place to sit\, listen and get entertained. Along the day we will encourage intensive networking in a safe environment we provide. \nTo ensure intensive group learning\, only 40 seats is available. We will encourage delegates from different industries and different cultural context through different geographical origins and limit numbers of tickets for a single organization or region. Diversity matter. \nThe main topic for 2019 is “INSTITUTIONAL INVERSION FOR AGILE ENTERPRISE”. \nImplementing Agile into organization begins with the change of mindset\, company culture and with the definition of success for operations differently. The difference\, however\, conflict with general perceptions of the industry in today’s world\, how an organization should be managed and how management should behave. What are the experiences of those who crossed the abyss? \nWe plan to cover topics like: \n\nbuilding an agile culture\, dealing with (internal) issues\,\ndealing with stakeholders – employees\, customers\, investors\npeople engagement and workplace design\,\nrole of management in an agile organization\,\nrecruitment for agility\, growth of human capital selecting vs. growing people\,\ncross-industry experience and inspirational managerial techniques\,\nremuneration for the agile era\,\nalternative financial instruments for “control” and forecasting\,\nHR aspects of agility\, selecting vs. growing people\, strategies\,\nand more.

SUMMARY:ACE! 2019
DESCRIPTION:At ACE! 2019 I’m doing a mini-workshop where you can practice effective techniques for dealing with impediments. \nProblem? What Problem? – Getting rid of impediments quickly and effectively\nIf your organization wants to become agile and lean\, your teams need to be able to handle impediments quickly and effectively. In this game\, you will practice how to recognize and analyze impediments\, understand how they can hinder your team\, and decide what can be done and who can take appropriate action by deploying agile and lean principles and good practices. \nAn agile way of working doesn’t guarantee that there will be no problems. Most probably there will be; working agile will make them surface. Agile teams need skills to deal with impediments to be effective and be able to deliver and satisfy the needs of their customers and stakeholders. Agile teams are self-organized\, nobody will solve their problems for them. They can decide how they want to do their work. Having the authority to decide comes with a responsibility: you have to solve problems that the team is facing. You cannot rely on management to solve them for you. That may sound like a disadvantage\, but it actually is an advantage since you are allowed to solve them in a way that is most suitable and effective for you. \nThe impediment game that we will play in this session will teach you the five steps for handling impediments effectively: \n\nrecognizing impediments\nunderstanding how they are hindering the team\nfind effective solutions to deal with them\ndecide what to do and who can do it\nlearn how to become more effective in dealing with impediments\n\nThe steps suggest that they have to be done after each other\, which is often preferred in most situations. But this is not a waterfall process. \nUsually\, the steps take little time\, you can go through all steps within an hour (for instance by doing a retrospective) or in less time (e.g. doing the steps during your daily stand-up). If you are stuck in one step you can decide to proceed to the next one\, but then be prepared to go back and repeat the steps once you have more information. \nWant to attend ACE? Ask me for a discount code! \nIncreasing Agility with Retrospectives\nOn the 22nd of May\, I’m giving a full day Master Class at ACE!: Learn to achieve agility through retrospectives. Ticket sales has started.
