SUMMARY:Retrospective Facilitators Gathering 2023
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, a group of us who are passionate about retrospective facilitation gather to share observations\, grow our skills and work out things that are puzzling us. It’s a small\, invitation-only gathering\, which provides opportunities for very focused and high-density learning\, not to mention a bit of fun and interaction with our peers. \nThe Retrospective Facilitators Gathering is a yearly Open Space conference by and for experienced practitioners in agile retrospectives. People from all over the world come to this gathering to share experiences and ideas and to learn from other facilitators. \nOver the years I’ve learned a lot at the RFGs that I attended. It’s great to be among peers who share their experiences. The open space format enables relevant topics to pop up\, both for group and one-to-one sessions. \nThis year the Retrospective Facilitators Gathering (RFG) will be near Prague\, Czech Republic. I’m attending it to share my upcoming book Valuable Agile Retrospectives\, learn new exercises and techniques\, and sharpen my facilitator and (retrospective) teaching skills. \n

You’ll learn how to play games and facilitate coaching exercises that will help you to uncover better ways of working in your teams. \nYou can book individual or bother workshops (with a discount): Workshops at Better Ways Conference. \n \n \nWorkshop: Better ways to Facilitate Remote Retrospectives\nAgile Retrospectives help teams to continuously improve by reflecting to learn what is going well and what can be improved\, and to do improvement actions. Retrospective facilitators need to have a toolbox of retrospective exercises and the skills to design and facilitate remote agile retrospectives. \nRemote retrospectives pose extra challenges due to not having people in one physical room for the retrospective: \n\nRecognizing and dealing with retrospective smells or anti-patterns is hard in online meetings (but it can be done!)\nIt’s more difficult to foster productive and collaborative behavior and keep everyone involved during the retrospective\nNot physically being together calls for different retrospective exercises and innovative ways to do exercises online\nPsychological safety is a key issue in any retrospective\, it’s even more challenging when people collaborate remotely\n\nIn the workshop Better ways to Facilitate Remote Retrospectives\, we will practice doing remote retrospectives while fostering psychological safety using exercises that keep people involved. We’ll learn how to recognize and deal with smells and foster collaboration toward effective actions as a retrospective outcome. \nTarget audience\n\nRetrospective Facilitators\nTechnical (team) leaders and Scrum masters\nAgile (Scrum) Teams\nAgile and Lean Coaches\nProduct Owners and Project/Line Managers\nAnybody who is involved in agile retrospectives\n\nThe practices in this workshop will help you to get more value from doing remote agile retrospectives. \nLearning objectives\nWhat will you get out of this workshop: \n\nExplore unproductive behavior in retrospectives and learn to recognize retrospective smells or anti-patterns\nDevelop your facilitation skills for running remote retrospectives\nPractice different exercises for distributed retrospectives using online tools\nLearn about psychological safety in online meetings and what can be done to keep people involved\n\nAll attendees will get a free downloadable copy of the ebook Getting Value out of Agile Retrospectives\, a copy of the Agile Retrospectives Bingo\, and a copy of the Agile Retrospectives Smells Cards. (value over €30). \nWorkshop: Agile Self-assessments – Exploring Better ways to Increase Agility\nIn the workshop Agile Self-assessments – Exploring Better ways to Increase Agility\, you will practice games and exercises to explore how agile your teams are and what can be done to increase your agility. \nWe’ll be playing The Agile Self-Assessment Game\, a serious game used by teams and organizations to self-assess their agility. Playing this game enables professionals to reflect on collaboration and team interworking and engage in the next steps for their agile journey. With this game\, professionals can discover how agile they are and what they can do to increase their agility to deliver more value to their customers and stakeholders. \nYou’ll learn how to create an “agile map” using an invitation-based gamification approach. A map that inspires you with ideas for increasing your agility and suggestions on where to go next on your agile journey. \nIn this workshop\, you will experience different playing formats of The Agile Self-assessment Game. You’ll hear about the importance of pre-selecting cards to create focused coaching card decks and find out about different exercises that can be used to self-assess and play your agile journey. \nThe workshop is loaded with examples and suggestions to help you to increase your agility. \nTarget audience\n\nAgile (Scrum) Teams.\nTechnical (team) leaders and Scrum masters\nProduct Owners and Project/Line Managers\nStakeholders working with agile teams\nAgile and Lean Coaches\nAnybody who is supporting teams in agile transformations\n\nThe practices in this workshop will help you to explore your way of working and take the next steps on your agile journey. \nLearning objectives\nWhat will you get out of this workshop: \n\nExplore what agile and agility means and the benefits that they can bring\nUnderstand the power of engagement and invitation-based agile adoption approaches\nExperience how you can self-assess the agility of teams and organizations\nPlay the Agile Self-assessment Game using different playing formats and card decks\nLearn ways for planning and traveling your own agile journey\n\nThe workshop Assessing your Agility is based on the Agile Self-assessment Game. SUMMARY:Mini-workshop Retrospecting your Retrospectives at eXperience Agile 2020
DESCRIPTION:The mini-workshop Retrospecting your Retrospectives at eXperience Agile 2020 provides you with ideas to debug your agile retrospectives\, find out why they aren’t working and learn how to spice them up and bring the energy back in the team. \nAre your retrospective meetings not helping teams to improve? Same actions coming up every retro? People skip the retro\, or find them boring? A lack of energy in the room? Chit-chatting instead of discussing real issues? No need for that\, let’s retrospect your retrospectives! \nIn this mini-workshop\, you will experience how to use retrospective exercises to debug your retrospective meetings. People will work in teams to reflect on how their retrospectives are going and will learn what they can do to make them valuable again. \nIt’s a highly interactive session\, learning by doing. I’ll bring in my experience from 20 years of doing agile retrospectives\, and will set a culture where people will share their ideas and learn. \nAgile retrospectives should help teams to reflect at the end of each iteration to learn and decide what to improve and take action in the next iteration. Valuable Agile Retrospectives provide the solution for a successful agile adoption at all levels in the organization. They help teams to reflect and learn how to apply agile practices effectively\, and support managers with ideas to set conditions for their teams to grow and deliver more value. \nBut sometimes retrospectives don’t live up their expectation. Problems that can happen are: \n\nThe same questions (what went well\, what to improve) are being asked\nSimilar actions keep coming up in every retrospective\nNothing happens after the meeting\, actions are not done\nPeople are postponing or skipping the retrospective meeting\nTeam members complain that retrospectives are boring and a waste of time\nThere’s a lack of energy in the room during the meeting\, people are not engaged\nPeople don’t feel safe to speak up and share their view\nDiscussions in the retrospective are not about the real problems (elephant in the room)\nThe retrospective facilitator is leading people towards a pre-defined answer/solution\n\nIn this session\, teams will be doing 5 different exercises. In a time slot of two hours\, teams rotate to do 2-3 of them. \nIntended audience: Scrum masters\, agile coaches\, tech leads\, developers\, testers\, operations\, and anyone who facilitates retrospectives. \nThis session includes ideas published in my book  Getting Value out of Agile Retrospectives\, practices from the  Retrospective Exercises Toolbox\, and agile coaching tools available in my webshop. It’s partly based on things that I teach in one of my workshops: Increasing Organizational Agility with Retrospectives. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn to use exercises to reflect on your current practice of retrospectives\nSee how to create a safe and productive environment to run retrospectives\nPractice effective skills for facilitating retrospectives and getting people engaged

As an alternative\, please join Increasing Agility with Retrospectives at ACE! on May 22 in Krakow\, Poland. \nLeveraging the benefits of Retrospectives\nIn this workshop\, you will learn how to scale agile retrospectives by doing them with multiple teams from a project\, product or organization\, practice facilitation skills with different retrospective exercises\, and learn how you can introduce and improve retrospectives. You will also learn to do agile self-assessments and readiness checks and to design and facilitate retrospectives that help organizations to increase their agility. \nAgile retrospectives are mostly known as a technique for a team to reflect and learn. This workshop builds on this and takes retrospectives to the organizational level. You will learn how to scale agile retrospectives\, doing them with multiple teams. Explore ways how retrospectives can be used to share learnings and apply DevOps to align the way of working in the whole organization. \nThe best way to learn retrospectives is through experience\, by doing them yourself and participating in retrospectives. In this workshop\, you will practice facilitation skills with different retrospective exercises from the Retrospective Exercises Toolbox. You will learn how to introduce and improve retrospectives in your organization\, do agile self-assessments and readiness checks and to design and facilitate retrospectives that help organizations to increase their agility with DevOps and become more agile and lean. \nAudience & Requirements\nThis workshop is intended for:\n•    Agile coaches and change agents\n•    Scrum masters and retrospective facilitators\n•    Team\, product or project managers\n•    (senior) managers\n•    Anybody involved in retrospectives \nAttendees should have basic knowledge about agile retrospectives and some experience with facilitating retrospectives. \nLearning by practicing and experiencing\n \nDoing it yourself and reflecting\, that is the way people learn new practices and skills in my workshops. They work in teams to try out things and experiment with practices to learn how agile looks and feels. I answer questions\, share my experience\, coach people\, and provide lots of ideas. They learn from me\, and also from each other \nI use many exercises\, games\, and real-life cases in my workshops. Examples are the retrospectives toolbox\, the Impediment Game\, and the Agile Self-assessment Game. \nMy approach enables attendees to apply the things they learned in their daily work.\nThe workshops are time well spend; organizations get value for their money! \nAbout the Conference\nDevOps Conference 2019 Berlin is the Conference for Continuous Delivery\, Microservices\, Containers\, Clouds and Lean Business
