SUMMARY:Self-assessments and Fostering an Agile Culture at DevOpsCon London 2022
DESCRIPTION:I’ll be doing a workshop and a session at DevOpsCon London 2022: Fostering an Agile Culture and Getting People Engaged into Agile with Self-Assessments. \nDevOpsCon London is a hybrid conference with attendees on-site and remote joining sessions. I will give live demos of the games\, exercises\, and coaching tools\, followed by a Q&A. \nWorkshop Fostering an Agile Culture\nMany DevOps transformations do not live up to the agile promise of delivering better products\, faster\, at lower costs. The missing ingredients in transformations that fail often have to do with an insufficient agile mindset and difficulties in changing to a culture of DevOps thinking and acting. An agile delivery culture is a foundation for a DevOps journey\, it is a key success factor that you need to work on. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll explore how organizations can visualize their culture and self-assess their DevOps agility. We learn about how organizations can foster a mindset and culture change toward DevOps and how they are applying DevOps capabilities to deliver value frequently and fast. \nNext\, we’ll explore how team autonomy and morale can be increased by playing the Agile Impediment Board Game. Finally\, we’ll see how agile retrospectives can be used to establish continuous improvement with effective communication and collaboration\, to keep your DevOps journey going in the right direction. \nMain takeaways \n\nLearn how to visualize your existing Agile DevOps culture and see the need for culture change\nShare DevOps strengths and challenges to explore what can be done to foster an agile delivery culture\nExperience how gamification can be used to improve teams in dealing with impediments\nPractice retrospective techniques to reflect and find ways to improve your DevOps delivery mindset and pipelines\n\nGetting People Engaged into Agile with Self-Assessments\nImposing agile doesn’t work! Let’s explore how we can use engagement models and gamification to involve people in the change process and help them define and travel their own agile journey. We will play the Agile Self-Assessment Game to experience how to enable people to pull in ideas for change and apply those in a way that best suits their needs. \nMany agile “transformations” are failing\, where one of the main reasons is how they are imposing agile models and practices on people. Such an approach conflicts with the agile values and principles\, it’s incongruent and hence ineffective. \nEngagement models take a different approach\, they involve people in the change process and help them to define and travel their own agile journey. \nPlaying the Agile Self-Assessment Game enables teams to reflect on their own team interworking and agree upon the next steps for their agile journey. With this card game\, they can discover how agile they are and what they can do to increase their agility to deliver more value to their customers and stakeholders. \nJoin us to explore the Agile Self-Assessment Game and try out different playing scenarios. \nRetrospecting your Retrospectives – Cancelled due to workshop on April 26\nAre your retrospective meetings not helping teams to improve? Same actions coming up every time? Do people skip them\, or find them boring? Is there a lack of energy in the room? There’s no need for that! Let’s retrospect your retrospectives! \nThis session provides you with ideas to debug your agile retrospectives to find out when and why they aren’t working and learn how to spice them up and make them valuable again. \nIn this mini-workshop\, you will experience how to use retrospective exercises to debug your retrospective meetings. People will work in teams to reflect how their retrospectives are going and will learn what they can do to make them valuable again. \nIt’s a highly interactive session\, learning by doing. I’ll bring in my experience from 19 years of doing agile retrospectives\, and will set a culture where people will share their ideas and learn. \nDevOpsCon London\nEvery year in April\, DevOps Conference London is the go-to event for DevOps enthusiasts. \nThis year\, too\, we look forward to meeting you again! \nBecause we want to ensure that the lively exchange of knowledge and ideas so typical of DevOps London continues to work well\, we were one of the first in the conference industry to develop our hybrid concept. \nYou can choose to “attend” the conference either on site or online from your home or office. In order to be accessible to all participants\, all DevOps tracks will be streamed live. Using professional video technology\, all lectures and workshops will be broadcast live. And that’s not all: You can also get in touch with our speakers and expo partners\, even if you won’t be there! \nOf course\, the necessary hygiene and distance measures will be taken care of in the conference hotel. For this purpose\, we carefully monitor the number of participants. \nAs you can see – thanks to the innovative program and the numerous networking opportunities\, the upcoming DevOps London will provide the ideal framework for your continuing education. Whether on site in London or digitally – the choice is yours! \n

SUMMARY:Workshop Facilitating Remote Retrospectives - Live Online
DESCRIPTION:Learn how you can run remote retrospectives\, practice online exercises that involve everyone\, and gain insight into psychological safety in distributed retrospectives in the online workshop Facilitating Remote Retrospectives on March 31\, 2022. \nA one-day virtual workshop for €450. \n \n \nFacilitating Remote Retrospectives\nAgile Retrospectives help teams to continuously improve by reflecting at the end of each iteration to learn what is going well and what can be improved\, and to do improvement actions in the next iteration. Retrospective facilitators need to have a toolbox of retrospective exercises and the skills to design and lead valuable agile retrospectives. \nRemote retrospectives pose extra challenges due to not having people in one physical room for the retrospective: \n\nRecognizing and dealing with retrospective smells or anti-patterns is hard in online meetings (but it can be done!)\nIt’s more difficult to foster productive and collaborative behavior and keep everyone involved during the meeting\nNot physically being together calls for different retrospective exercises or innovative ways to do exercises online\nPsychological safety is a key issue in any retrospective\, it’s more challenging when people collaborate remotely\n\nIn the workshop Facilitating Remote Retrospectives\, we will practice doing remote retrospectives while fostering psychological safety using exercises that keep people involved. \nAudience\nThis workshop is intended for: \n\nRetrospective Facilitators\nTechnical (team) leaders and Scrum masters\nAgile Teams\nAgile and Lean Coaches\nProduct Owners and Project/Line Managers\nAnybody who is involved in agile retrospectives\n\nThe practices in this workshop will help you to get more value from doing remote agile retrospectives. \nResults\nWhat will you get out of this workshop: \n\nExplore unproductive behavior in retrospectives and learn to recognize retrospective smells or anti-patterns\nDevelop your facilitation skills for running remote retrospectives\nPractice different exercises for distributed retrospectives using online tools\nLearn about psychological safety in online meetings and what can be done to keep people involved\n\nPractical information\nFour-hour interactive online live workshop. \nYou can book this workshop by buying a ticket or by contacting me by email at benlinders@gmail.com. \nThere’s no minimum number of attendees\, this workshop will be held even if only one person signs up. Tickets are limited to ensure that all attendees can participate in exercises and play the games to be fully involved and engaged. \nCancelations are allowed until two weeks before the workshop is held. If you can’t attend then a colleague can use your ticket to join. \nAll attendees will get a free downloadable copy of the ebook Getting Value out of Agile Retrospectives\, a copy of the Agile Retrospectives Bingo\, and a copy of the Agile Retrospectives Smells Cards. (value €30). \n \nTestimonials\nBelow testimonials come from the many workshops on agile retrospectives that I have done over the years. \n“The workshop presented in a clear way why retrospectives are the driving force to an organization which wants to improve. Using some playful exercises I learned several easy ways to extract the current status of the team and how to decide which should be the next steps to address potential problems and risks” \nNikolaos Raptis – Scrum Master – Software Developer at Scytl Secure Electronic Voting \n“I got a better understanding of retrospectives and many ideas on how to use them in my work. I can suggest this workshop to anyone that wants to go agile.  Also thanks for the reading material\, I found it very helpful.” \nBill Souliotis – Manager Software Research & Development Graphics User Interface at BETA CAE Systems \n“After working together for many years\, our team (myself included) grew out of the need for formal retrospectives. This workshop helped to get some fresh ideas that can refuel our retros and stressed some key points about the necessity and importance of facilitation in these events.” \nYorgos Saslis – Solution Design Executive at CytechMobile.com \n“I’d like to thank you again for your excellent workshop. It was fun and I already started using some of the ideas with my team. The change is definitely notable.” \nLiran Ben-Porat\, qSpark LTD \n“Thanks once again for a wonderful workshop! We have a lot of useful outputs which we are going to implement. And thanks for the free copy of your book about the retrospectives\, now we are able to go through the topics once again and do the exercises in our company.” \nJakub Grós\, Project Engineer at Honeywell \n“I found the workshop very useful. We’ve already started to experiment with some action items we gave ourselves in the workshop\, doing changes in our overall retrospective approach. We are also trying out cross facilitation\, having our retrospectives facilitated by a Scrum master of another team.” \nSimona Humpolová\, Scrum master at EmbedIT \nI have taken some of my Scrum masters to Ben’s retrospective training. I like the training very much\, and also his website which contains many retro techniques. I still use this as a reference when I coach people. \nZoltán Ludányi\, Agile Software Development Consultant \nLearning by practicing and experiencing\nDoing it yourself and reflecting is the way people learn new practices and develop skills in my workshops. They work in teams to try out things and experiment with practices to learn how agile can really look and feel. I coach people\, answer questions\, share my experience\, and provide lots of ideas. They learn from me\, and also from each other. \nI use many exercises\, games\, and real-life cases in my workshops. Examples are the retrospectives toolbox\, the Impediment Game\, and the Agile Self-assessment Game. \nMy approach enables attendees to apply the things they learned in their daily work.\nThe workshops are time well spend; organizations get value for their money!

SUMMARY:Increasing Psychological Safety in Agile Teams - Agile Humans meetup
DESCRIPTION:Agile Humans has invited me to their Agile Lean Coffee meetup to facilitate a session on increasing psychological safety in agile teams. Come join om on March 3\, 18:30 CET\, to play a game with the Psychological Safety Cards. \nIncreasing Psychological Safety in Agile Teams\nPsychological safety in teams is important; it is necessary for the team to be able to communicate and collaborate effectively in order to deliver value. It’s also necessary to build long-lasting teams since things will happen and relationships will be strained; team members must be informed of what’s going on in the team and feel comfortable dealing with it. But\, how safe is a team? How can we determine if there are any factors that make the team unsafe or have an impact on the team’s culture? \nIn this mini-workshop\, we’ll play a game for psychological safety and team culture utilizing a deck of coaching cards. We will learn how to use gamification to gain a better understanding of what’s going on in teams. Individuals can share what they have learned from working in teams\, how it impacted the team’s safety and culture\, and what led to positive change. \nWe’ll use a Jamboard for the game\, so you will need a Google account to join the Jamboard. All participants will receive a code along with a discount for buying the cards (more information at Agile Humans: Your copy of the Psychological Safety cards). \nAgile Humans Lean Coffee Meetup\nThis is a group for anyone interested in Agile organizational culture and agile practices. \nAgile Humans Lean Coffee is committed to improving the quality and quantity of the first Agile manifesto value: Individuals and Interactions over Processes and Tools. \nWe help each other improve our work by teaching each other what we’ve learned through practice. \nWe gather online\, on the first Thursday of every month\, at 6:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Improving Your Quality and Testing Skills with Gamification at OOP 2022
DESCRIPTION:I’m doing a session at OOP 2022 to explore how gamification can be used to improve quality and testing skills. Join me online on February 2\, 2022. \nImproving Your Quality and Testing Skills with Gamification\nSo many challenges\, so little time. As testers or quality engineers\, we need to sharpen the saw\, but how? Gamification can be a way to look at how you’re doing and find out where to improve. It’s a great way to have everyone engaged and get the best out of people. \nIn this presentation\, Ben Linders will show how playing games (onsite or online) with the Agile Testing Coaching Cards and Agile Quality Coaching Cards help to explore your current quality and testing practice and decide as a team on what to improve or experiment with. \nTarget Audience: Testers\, Agile Teams\, Tech Leads\, Technical Coaches\, Scrum Masters\nPrerequisites: None\nLevel: Advanced \nExtended Abstract \nThe Agile Testing Coaching Cards and Agile Quality Coaching Cards are a deck of cards with statements that help people to share and reflect. Examples of cards are “Testers help developers design acceptance criteria for user stories”\, “Failing tests get proper attention even when no defect in the product has been detected”\, and “Refactoring is done to keep code maintainable and reduce technical debt”. \nPlaying games with these coaching cards (onsite or online)\, you can learn from each other. Teams can use the coaching cards to discuss quality and testing values\, principles\, and practices\, and share their experiences and learnings. \nDifferent game formats can be used to share experiences on testing and quality principles and practices and explore how they can be applied effectively. The playing formats from the Agile Self-assessment Game (benlinders.com/game) can be used to play with these cards. This presentation provides an overview of playing formats and will inspire you to come up with your own formats. \nFacilitation is key when playing with these coaching cards. Ben Linders will present how to prepare a game session and facilitate it\, what can be done to keep people engaged\, and how debriefing can help to pull out learnings and ideas for improvement. \nTakeaways: \n– Show how to use gamification to self-assess your current way of working. \n– Present examples of playing games with the Agile Testing Coaching Cards and Agile Quality Coaching Cards. \n– Explore how facilitating games can help to enhance quality and testing in agile teams. \nOOP\nIT professionals who are responsible for software architecture\, IT projects\, and sophisticated programming and development rely on the OOP conference – one of the most well-known and largest software conferences in the German-speaking world – when it comes to their professional development. \nThis makes OOP conference a fixed date in the calendar for the software community\, even digitally. The latest trends from the field of software technology as well as practice-oriented presentations by experienced and recognized speakers who will share their knowledge\, enthusiasm and also their concerns with you.

SUMMARY:How to start up a distributed team online with gamification - Agile Belgium
DESCRIPTION:I’m doing an interactive online meetup about starting up distributed teams online using gamification for Agile Belgium\, January 5\, 2022\, 19:00 CET. \nHow to start up a distributed team online with gamification\nRemote first is becoming the norm\, and this is also true for new teams. Where you would previously organize one or more onsite kick-off sessions to start a new team\, a new distributed team would have to be working online together from day 1. \nTechniques used for team chartering might still be useful\, but they would need a different approach for online working. Gamification\, incentifying people’s engagement by using game-style principles and practices\, can help you to build strong teams. \nIn this session\, we’ll look at several tools and playing formats that can be used to start up distributed teams and foster further development. \nAgile Belgium\nThis is the meetup group of the Agile Belgium community. We organize regular drinkups and user group meetings. Come after work and meet people you usually only meet at conferences. Anyone interested in Agile or Lean can join. \n

What questions do you want us to ask? \nOr why not ask them yourself at this year’s #Agile Tour London #ATLDN\, our quirky 100% live event! https://lnkd.in/gXVqRnX \nIt will be a 45-minute livestreamed panel discussed (questions welcome in our Zoom chat!) followed by 15 minutes of unrecorded discussion to close out our 100% LIVE and Online two-day event. \nCan’t make it? Our two panels are the only part of our event shared live elsewhere. This panel on cultivating #PsychologicalWellbeing in your teams will be also streamed on our YouTube channel 12pm UK\, kicking off our event\, Thursday 21 October\, so do SUBSCRIBE! https://lnkd.in/dpDWs5rF \nAgile Tour London\nAs Agile enters its 20s\, it’s time we stop looking at it as a team-based or department-based activity\, or something just for IT. It is a collective mindset that must see us break down walls and work together towards organisational agility. It’s time to recognise each business has three pillars — people\, business and technology — and that organisations will topple without focusing on all three working together toward shared objectives. \nIn its ninth year\, Agile Tour London will continue to expand our own goals around breaking silos and increasing communication. And as we’ve done with the last four unique online events\, it will be completely LIVE and intentionally interactive\, with keynotes\, panels and talks recorded in Zoom Meeting\, and all workshops\, after-talk discussions and networking activities unrecorded in our self-organised virtual venue Spatial.Chat. \n

SUMMARY:How Agile Are You? Let’s Play the Agile Self-assessment Game @ Agile Humans Lean Coffee!
DESCRIPTION:I’ve been invited to the Agile Humans Lean Coffee meetup to facilitate a session where we play the Agile Self-assessment Game online. Join me on May 6: Book your seat at Agile Humans Lean Coffee. \nHow Agile Are You?\nLet’s get together and play the Agile Self-assessment Game. \nDuring this meetup\, Ben Linders will show how gamification enables you to pull in ideas for change and apply those in a way that best suits your collective needs. We’ll be playing with the Agile Self-assessment Cards to find out how this works. There’s also time for questions on agile adoption\, transformations\, and self-assessments. \nIt is a serious cooperative card game\, an agile ”compass & map”. \nJoin us and find out: \n– Where you are on your agile journey and get inspired with ideas and suggestions on where to go next. \n– What you can do to increase your agility to deliver more value to your customers and stakeholders. \nYou can play with the self-assessment cards in agile retrospectives\, or use the cards to set up a team or explore how things are going in your team. Games can be played with cards in co-located and distributed teams; there are many different playing formats available and you can design your own online game format using digital card images. \nAgile Humans Lean Coffee\nThis is a group for anyone interested in Agile organizational culture and agile practices. \nAgile Humans Lean Coffee is committed to improving the quality and quantity of the first Agile manifesto value: Individuals and Interactions over Processes and Tools. \nWe help each other improve our work by teaching each other what we’ve learned through practice. \nInitially\, our meetup group used to gather the local agile community in Serbia\, but now we have become international – our meetups are online and the communication is in English. We have monthly practitioner-driven talks\, every first Thursday at 6.30 pm.
