SUMMARY:Back to the Future - A Futurespective on Software Development in 2040
DESCRIPTION:I’m doing an online meetup with the Aginext community where we’ll do a futurespective on software development in 2040. Seats are limited\, sign up for the Aginext Futurespective. \nBack to the Future – A Futurespective on Software Development in 2040\nA futurespective is an agile retrospective where you start from the goal to find ways how to get there. Teams place themselves in the future by imagining that their goal has been reached. \nI just came back from 2040 to find out that we are still making software. But it’s not as we know it\, Jim! Software development is done completely different compared to the agile wave that we had at the start of the century. How different? Well\, let’s futuresplore it together. \nIn this session\, we will do a futurespective on how software development will be done in the future when we have finally mastered this profession. After sketching the future we’ll discuss what got us there\, and we think about the steps that we can take in 2020 to reach the castle in the sky. \nAginext Community\nAginext is first and foremost a community with an agile mindset. We host agile events online and off\, and our community is a driving force behind Agile in London. This online community looks to bridge the gap between agile events\, and to share agile advice\, experiments\, and experiences.

SUMMARY:Aginext.io 2020
DESCRIPTION:I’m returning to Aginext.io to explore how the future of agile can look. Join me in my futurespective on software development in 2040. \nBack to the Future – A Futurespective on Software Development in 2040\nI just came back from 2040 to find out that we are still making software. But it’s not as we know it\, Jim! Software development is done completely different compared to the agile wave that we had at the start of the century. How different? Well\, let’s futuresplore it together \nIn this session\, we will do a futurespective on how software development will be done in the future when we have finally mastered this profession. After sketching the future we’ll discuss what got us there\, and we think about the steps that we can take in 2020 to reach the castle in the sky. \nWhy would you join this session? One reason to participate would be to think about how to innovate the way software is developed and hear what other people think. Another reason would be to participate in a futurespective exercise\, which is a technique used in agile retrospectives. Finally\, you can practice out-of-the-box thinking in this session\, being freed by anything roadblocks your organization has as in the future they won’t be there anymore. \nAginext.io\nAginext is the Post-Agile Conference. It’s two days in London dedicated to advanced agile and what comes next. \nSo you’ve been doing agile for a while. Your systems and your people are increasingly complex. What’s next? A lot of agile teams are looking to level up their business agility. \nAgile at scale. Culture at scale. Digital leadership. The Post-Agile World. DevOps and cross-organisational digital transformation. Aginext looks to talk about and experiment with the unthinkable and undoable that’s already happening in some orgs. \nUse the code “BL_15″ to get 15% off! \nI have been part of the program committee of Aginext 2020\, where I supported the organizers in setting up the conference program and connecting with speakers.

SUMMARY:Stretch Conference 2020
DESCRIPTION:I’m doing a full-day workshop Assessing your Agility and talk about leading for self-organization at Stretch\, the leadership and management conference in Budapest from February 12-14. \nLeading for Self-organisation: Do’s and Don’ts of Agile Management\nAgile is something for teams\, right? True\, but teams don’t function in a vacuum. As a manager\, you can set the stage and support teams who want to increase their agility. This presentation explores three topics that managers can work on to make teams succeed and increase the company’s agility: Leadership\, Collaboration\, and Culture. \nWith agile\, teams are supposed to make their own decisions on what to do and how to do. Managers should be delegating decisions to the team and trusting them to do the right thing. But letting go of control can be a scary thing. \nIn this talk\, I will explore leadership approaches suitable for teams and managers that want to become agile. I’ll show how teams can use the approaches to become empowered\, and how managers use them to guide teams towards producing valuable results. \nOne of the biggest challenges that managers face when adopting agile is increasing collaboration\, both within the team and between teams. I’ll start by exploring why people would like to work in teams\, what’s in it for them. Understanding this can help you as a manager to support people to do a better job together. \nImpediments to collaboration should be solved by the team as much as possible; they should be capable to deal with blockers and get them out of the way. In this talk I’ll show how managers can help teams by listening to them\, giving them what they need\, and addressing organization-wide impediments by tearing down walls in organizations. \nTo make agile work\, people should feel psychologically safe to make decisions and try out things. It can be challenging to establish a culture that enables agile. \nLet’s explore what managers can do to create and nurture a culture that fosters experimentation\, and what they can do to enabling learning from failures and from things that go well. \nTo sum it up\, I’ll provide a list of things that managers should consider doing if they want their teams to be successful\, and things that may be harmful to teams that they could stop doing. \n \nStretch Conference\n\nAn international platform and community for leaders and managers to share stories\, hands-on solutions and explore new trends and ideas to lead\, fail\, learn and stretch: Stretch is a non-profit conference that brings 500 attendees from all around the world who want to build effective organizations since 2013. \n\n\nTopics: Dive deep into agile leadership\, coaching\, mental health\, continuous learning\, remote management\, high-performing teams\, organizational culture\, diversity and inclusion.

SUMMARY:Workshop Assessing your Agility at Stretch
DESCRIPTION:I’m giving the full-day workshop Assessing your Agility at Stretch 2020 on February 12 in Budapest\, Hungary. Ticket sales has started: Workshop: Assessing Your Agility. \nAssessing your Agility\nThere isn’t a silver bullet or standard route to increase your agility\, you have to find your own way. Copying a model to become agile won’t help\, and imposing agile upon people isn’t an effective approach. What does work is empowering your teams to help them find out how agile they are and providing them with exercises and games to set course for their own agile journey. \nIn the workshop assessing your agility\, you will practice games and exercises to explore how agile your teams are. Next\, you’ll learn how to create an “agile map” that inspires you with ideas for increasing your agility and provides suggestions on where to go next on your agile journey. \nWe’ll be playing The Agile Self-Assessment Game\, a serious game used by teams and organizations to self-assess their agility. Playing the game enables professionals to reflect on collaboration and team interworking and agree upon the next steps for their agile journey. With this game\, they can discover how agile they are and what they can do to increase their agility to deliver more value to their customers and stakeholders. \nIn this workshop\, you will experience different playing formats of The Agile Self-assessment Game. You’ll hear about the importance of pre-selecting cards to create focused card decks and find out about different exercises that can be used to self-assess and play your agile journey. \nWhat will you learn: \n\nExplore what agile and agility means and the benefits that they can bring\nUnderstand the power of engagement and invitation-based agile adoption approaches\nExperience how you can self-assess the agility of teams and organizations\nPlay the Agile Self-assessment Game using different playing formats and card decks\nLearn ways for planning and traveling your own agile journey\n\nThe workshop Assessing your Agility is based on the Agile Self-assessment Game. All attendees will get a free downloadable copy of the Agile Self-Assessment Game and the ebook ‘The Agile Self-assessment Game’ (value $30). \nAbout Stretch Conference\nAn international platform and community for leaders and managers to share stories\, hands-on solutions and explore new trends and ideas to lead\, fail\, learn and stretch: Stretch is a non-profit conference that brings 500 attendees from all around the world who want to build effective organizations since 2013. \nDive deep into agile leadership\, coaching\, mental health\, continuous learning\, remote management\, high-performing teams\, organizational culture\, diversity and inclusion.

SUMMARY:Budapest Agile & StretchCon meetup with Ben Linders [Sold Out]
DESCRIPTION:I’ve been invited to the Budapest meetup to facilitate one of my games: The Agile Self-assessment Game. The meetup is sold out\, but there are a few seats left for my workshop Assessing your Agility on February 12 in Budapest. \nJoin Ben Linders for an Agile Self-Assessment Game\nBecoming agile is a journey\, and it can be a difficult one. Playing the Agile Self-Assessment Game can help you to come up with ideas to smoothly and successfully travel your agile journey. \nAssuming that you know why you want to become agile (a first but crucial step)\, you start looking for ways of getting there. Questions like “what do you want to keep from your current way of working?” and “what would you like to change?” will come up at the start. The next questions that usually pop up are “how are we doing?” and “what can we do to improve and increase our agility?”. \nIn this meetup\, people will form teams to play different playing formats described in the successful book The Agile Self-Assessment Game. They will learn ways to discover how agile you are – and what you can do to increase your agility. After the meetup\, participants will be able to play the game with your own team. \nThe game and book can be downloaded for a nominal fee at benlinders.com/shop. Attendees will receive a discount code to download the Book & Cards package to play the game with their own team.

SUMMARY:OOP Conference 2020
DESCRIPTION:At the OOP Conference\, I’ll be talking about taking retrospectives to the next level: Organizational Agility. Join me in Munich\, February 3-7\, 2020. \nRetrospectives To The Next Level: Organizational Agility\nAgile Retrospectives can be used to deal with problems in teams\, at a project or product level\, or those related to the collaboration between the team and stakeholders. But you need a different approach compared to team level retrospectives to do organizational-wide improvement. \nThis session shows how to use agile retrospectives to reveal and solve systemic organizational problems and to increase the company’s agility It explores different approaches\, formats\, and techniques for agile retrospectives that are done beyond the development team. \nTarget Audience: Managers\, Teams\, Scrum Masters\, Agile Coaches\, Tech Leads\nPrerequisites: At least some experience with team/organizational improvement\nLevel: Practicing \nExtended Abstract\nNowadays many agile teams are doing retrospectives regularly. They are investing their time to reflect\, learn\, and take action to improve their way of working and deal with problems that they are facing in a structural way. \nOrganizations are seeing the benefits from this: teams that are becoming empowered\, being able to deliver more value to customers and stakeholders\, happy employees\, and fewer people leaving the organization. It’s time to take retrospectives to a higher level\, and use them to reveal and solve systemic organizational problems. Agile Retrospectives can be used to do that\, but you need a different approach. \nIn this session\, I will show how we can use retrospectives to improve the agility of organizations. \nNote: Some might call the above approach scaling retrospectives. If that goes towards imposing how teams do retrospectives with some kind of framework\, then I believe it doesn’t work. Increasing agility with retrospectives is about creating an environment where teams not only focus on their own improvement needs but also on the company as a whole\, and get support from management when improvements go over their team borders or outside their autonomy. \nOOP Conference\nThe OOP is the conference for software architecture.  In 2020 we offer you among other things: \n› More than 35 English sessions\n› 13 topics\n› Up to 9 parallel tracks\n› Many social events\n› Workshops\n› Graphic Recordings \nOnce again you will experience sessions at the highest level. \nTop-class Keynotes and international renowned speakers – that’s what OOP is famous for\, as it offers a mixture of deep content and a wide thematic spectrum!

SUMMARY:FlowCon France 2019
DESCRIPTION:At FlowCon France I will give a talk about Learning at Scale. The aim of FlowCon is to help all those who want to make their organizations more fluid. \nLearning at Scale\nWhere we are seeing more and more individual and team level learning and continuous improvement in organizations\, improvements at the higher levels still tend to pose significant challenges. We learn as a team and learn how to be a team\, but when we reach the borders of our team and have to deal with more complex systems involving people from our ecosystem and even sometimes from people outside our ecosystem\, many improvement practices break down and don’t lead to sustainable results. At the same time\, the bigger and more complex our solutions become\, the more we need to be able to secure improvement at all levels in the organization. \nIn this talk\, Ben Linders will explore what we can do to increase our understanding of systemic problems at higher levels in organizations\, and how to use that to improve the performance and agility of organizations. He will show how we can apply techniques like system/multi-team retrospectives and systems thinking to get improvement going at a level of two higher than the team\, and present the benefits that this can bring to teams and organizations as a whole. \nFlowCon France\nAfter 6 editions that have placed it among the reference conferences in France\, Lean Kanban France has become FlowCon France. We wanted a new identity that is more in line with what we want to share and promote: the flow. \nOur goal is to help all those who want to make their organizations more fluid. \nFlowCon is about offering quality content\, French and international\, in a warm and informal setting around topics such as Kanban\, agility\, continuous delivery\, user experience\, decentralized management\, etc.

Working in a small groups\, through series of practical mini workshops\, case studies\, moderated discussions and group work with peers they may gain better inside into how agility can help them transform their business or daily routine. It is place of learning from gurus\, sharing knowledge with peers\, gain new inspiration and ideas with active engagement of the participants! This is not a place to sit\, listen and get entertained. Along the day we will encourage intensive networking in a safe environment we provide. \nTo ensure intensive group learning\, only 40 seats is available. We will encourage delegates from different industries and different cultural context through different geographical origins and limit numbers of tickets for a single organization or region. Diversity matter. \nThe main topic for 2019 is “INSTITUTIONAL INVERSION FOR AGILE ENTERPRISE”. \nImplementing Agile into organization begins with the change of mindset\, company culture and with the definition of success for operations differently. The difference\, however\, conflict with general perceptions of the industry in today’s world\, how an organization should be managed and how management should behave. What are the experiences of those who crossed the abyss? \nWe plan to cover topics like: \n\nbuilding an agile culture\, dealing with (internal) issues\,\ndealing with stakeholders – employees\, customers\, investors\npeople engagement and workplace design\,\nrole of management in an agile organization\,\nrecruitment for agility\, growth of human capital selecting vs. growing people\,\ncross-industry experience and inspirational managerial techniques\,\nremuneration for the agile era\,\nalternative financial instruments for “control” and forecasting\,\nHR aspects of agility\, selecting vs. growing people\, strategies\,\nand more.

SUMMARY:Rebelcon.io 2019
DESCRIPTION:I’ve been invited to join Rebelcon.io in Cork\, Ireland on June 20\, and cover talks given at this conference for InfoQ.com\, and I will play the Agile Retrospective Bingo in a mini-workshop. \nFrom the conference website: \nIreland’s largest Software Engineering conference is back in 2019\, on June 19th & 20th at the Clayton Hotel Cork City. \nFor a third year in a row\, RebelCon is bringing together the Cork Software Engineering community over 2 days of workshops and talks on the latest technology\, culture and development practices in the software industry. \nRebelCon is a not for profit technology conference run by the developer community for the developer community. \nRebelCon is hosted by Poppulo with support for the initiative from it@cork Skillnet \nAgile Retrospective Bingo\nThe Agile Retrospectives Bingo is a game to identify and discuss unproductive behavior in retrospective meetings\, improve team communication and collaboration\, and make agile retrospectives more valuable. It’s a kind of bullshit bingo which is geared towards agile retrospectives. \nIn this short workshop\, we will play the Agile Retrospectives Bingo in teams. Half of the team will do a retrospective using role play\, the other half will observe what happens. When an observer sees unproductive behavior\, they will put a coin on the bingo card. The first one who has a horizontal\, vertical\, or diagonal line\, yells bingo and the retrospective stops. Then we’ll reflect and discuss what happened to learn how we can deal with unproductive behavior.

As an alternative\, please join Increasing Agility with Retrospectives at ACE! on May 22 in Krakow\, Poland. \nLeveraging the benefits of Retrospectives\nIn this workshop\, you will learn how to scale agile retrospectives by doing them with multiple teams from a project\, product or organization\, practice facilitation skills with different retrospective exercises\, and learn how you can introduce and improve retrospectives. You will also learn to do agile self-assessments and readiness checks and to design and facilitate retrospectives that help organizations to increase their agility. \nAgile retrospectives are mostly known as a technique for a team to reflect and learn. This workshop builds on this and takes retrospectives to the organizational level. You will learn how to scale agile retrospectives\, doing them with multiple teams. Explore ways how retrospectives can be used to share learnings and apply DevOps to align the way of working in the whole organization. \nThe best way to learn retrospectives is through experience\, by doing them yourself and participating in retrospectives. In this workshop\, you will practice facilitation skills with different retrospective exercises from the Retrospective Exercises Toolbox. You will learn how to introduce and improve retrospectives in your organization\, do agile self-assessments and readiness checks and to design and facilitate retrospectives that help organizations to increase their agility with DevOps and become more agile and lean. \nAudience & Requirements\nThis workshop is intended for:\n•    Agile coaches and change agents\n•    Scrum masters and retrospective facilitators\n•    Team\, product or project managers\n•    (senior) managers\n•    Anybody involved in retrospectives \nAttendees should have basic knowledge about agile retrospectives and some experience with facilitating retrospectives. \nLearning by practicing and experiencing\n \nDoing it yourself and reflecting\, that is the way people learn new practices and skills in my workshops. They work in teams to try out things and experiment with practices to learn how agile looks and feels. I answer questions\, share my experience\, coach people\, and provide lots of ideas. They learn from me\, and also from each other \nI use many exercises\, games\, and real-life cases in my workshops. Examples are the retrospectives toolbox\, the Impediment Game\, and the Agile Self-assessment Game. \nMy approach enables attendees to apply the things they learned in their daily work.\nThe workshops are time well spend; organizations get value for their money! \nAbout the Conference\nDevOps Conference 2019 Berlin is the Conference for Continuous Delivery\, Microservices\, Containers\, Clouds and Lean Business

SUMMARY:ACE! 2019
DESCRIPTION:At ACE! 2019 I’m doing a mini-workshop where you can practice effective techniques for dealing with impediments. \nProblem? What Problem? – Getting rid of impediments quickly and effectively\nIf your organization wants to become agile and lean\, your teams need to be able to handle impediments quickly and effectively. In this game\, you will practice how to recognize and analyze impediments\, understand how they can hinder your team\, and decide what can be done and who can take appropriate action by deploying agile and lean principles and good practices. \nAn agile way of working doesn’t guarantee that there will be no problems. Most probably there will be; working agile will make them surface. Agile teams need skills to deal with impediments to be effective and be able to deliver and satisfy the needs of their customers and stakeholders. Agile teams are self-organized\, nobody will solve their problems for them. They can decide how they want to do their work. Having the authority to decide comes with a responsibility: you have to solve problems that the team is facing. You cannot rely on management to solve them for you. That may sound like a disadvantage\, but it actually is an advantage since you are allowed to solve them in a way that is most suitable and effective for you. \nThe impediment game that we will play in this session will teach you the five steps for handling impediments effectively: \n\nrecognizing impediments\nunderstanding how they are hindering the team\nfind effective solutions to deal with them\ndecide what to do and who can do it\nlearn how to become more effective in dealing with impediments\n\nThe steps suggest that they have to be done after each other\, which is often preferred in most situations. But this is not a waterfall process. \nUsually\, the steps take little time\, you can go through all steps within an hour (for instance by doing a retrospective) or in less time (e.g. doing the steps during your daily stand-up). If you are stuck in one step you can decide to proceed to the next one\, but then be prepared to go back and repeat the steps once you have more information. \nWant to attend ACE? Ask me for a discount code! \nIncreasing Agility with Retrospectives\nOn the 22nd of May\, I’m giving a full day Master Class at ACE!: Learn to achieve agility through retrospectives.
